OUR WINERY: THE FARM ESTATE
BARN AND GROUNDS
While only a mile from exits of Interstate 81 and 83, this 60 acre farm estate is isolated by Nature from the vibrant community of people that surround it. From our Tasting Room - in a timeless Pennsylvania barn - to our grounds - which include vineyards, orchards, streams, patios, courtyards, paddocks and hop and beer gardens - SpringGate Vineyard is a special place. Our indoor social spaces from Champagne Bar, to the Haha and Covered Patios, Adirondack Room, and Brewery Lounge are unique. Come for a visit, and enjoy a unique experience with us, for a bottle of cider or wine, tastings, food, music, or a pint or crowler of our artisan beers.
Our barn and grounds are located on sixty acres that go back to an 18th Century European settlement. This includes everything from a log cabin (hidden by 19th century wooden siding), to the site of the first Presbyterian Seminary in the United States, to a trout hatchery and, of course, vineyards. All of this co-exists with sheep, domestic rabbits, goats, chickens, alpaca, and of course, our dog, "Icy". The ground floor of the timeless Pennsylvania barn is used by the Tasting Room and the winemakers, with the rest of the barn used for private events (including corporate) and offices. While the "western" end of the property is available to our guests during open public hours, the rest of the barn and grounds are used for private events, wine and vineyard production, etc. |
WINE means growing and fermenting!
Starting with a test acre in 2010, six acres of vineyards planted through 2013, and an additional four acres planted in the Spring of 2014, there are a lot of grape vines being maintained! Our goal is to manage the vineyard in the most sustainable fashion. In the particular terroir that the estate exists, we can create wines that the region drinks. This reflects many of the grape choices we have made: Noiret, Cornell's Riesling Hybrid, Vidal, Cornell's Hybrid Muscato, Cabernet Franc, Marquette, etc.
In the future, we will continue to plant grapes for this growing business and industry.

MAPLES AND CRYSTAL CLEAR SPRING WATER
When we bought this farm, we thought it had potential to be beautiful and have fantastic water due to the springs. While we don't water down the wine, there are lots of other uses of really good spring water. Having lived in upstate New York for years, we decided to immediately add two things: Sugar Maples and orchards, especially apples.
We also tried our hand at raising trout - successfully. There was nothing like our young boys and their friends pulling 36 inch rainbows and brownies out of the fish hatchery.
