Issues Before Our Legislators
(1) Ready To Drink Cocktails (RTDs). - Choice
Ready to drink cocktails are generally canned cocktails using Liquor (spirits) in a low ABV format - similar to substantially less than wine. The PA Senate has finished its work on a bill which would allow RTD cocktails, limiting their ABV, to be available for sale in Grocery, Convenience Stores, Beer Distributors, and Restaurants for opening and consumption at home, or use on the premise. This provides choice (and convenience) to the citizens of Pennsylvania as we are no longer dependent on the skills of a governmental buyer to know what we want, in a limited number of inconvenient locations. The incumbents hate this bill. |
General Background
Pennsylvania is one of the most complex, consumer unfriendly, finacially questionable, and local manufacturing negative states in these United States. Compared to our nearby states such as Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, New York, Delaware we generally rank near the very bottom in all of these categories. This traces back to ancient thinking from the 1920's and incumbent organizations that are focused on themselves instead of what is good for the commonwealth.
While the list of issues is substantial, in 2020 we suffered from that incumbency as the only state in our nation not to be able to buy spirits, and very nearly wine. We joined nation states like SouthAfrica, India, and Turkey, it was nothing to be proud about, and yet the incumbents were. SpringGate's position is not just about our manufacturing desires, but as long lived citizens of the state with our neighbors looking for: choice, transparency, encouragement of local manufacturing. In all of these areas it is about the incumbents getting out of the way, not subsidy. Nearly every bill to change the situation actually brings additional revenue into PA's Treasury. |
